The Book Chain Project gives production, safety, technical and ethical teams at publishers a selection of useful tools to better understand and manage the responsibility of their book supply chains.
The Book Chain project:
- Helps you to make informed buying decisions. Sharing the collective influence and purchasing scale of all publishers gives everyone access to the detailed data you need to better identify and manage the risks in your supply chain.
- Provides a single database to make sense of complex data. You’ll have comprehensive coverage of the tree species used in papers and boards directly from paper manufacturers; detailed chemical substance lists used in your suppliers’ inks, glues and other components, all screened against global safety legislation; and live updates to labour and environmental audits directly from your supplier factories.
Publishers can choose to participate in the elements of the Book Chain Project most useful for their business. The project fees shown below are based on an annual work plan, whose year begins on 1st September and ends 31st August. Fees are adjusted pro rata each quarter (from 1st September) for publishers arriving throughout the year.
Publishers joining all three tools in the Book Chain Project will benefit from a £1000 discount.

* A reduced-access version of the PREPS tool is available for an ‘entry level’ fee which is 50% of the total fee shown in the table. ‘Entry level’ gives smaller publishers access to basic data in the PREPS tool and also attendance at the annual seminars. It does not include involvement at working groups or the more detailed data and functionality in the system. Please contact us for more information.
Printers can access all elements of the Book Chain Project. Both PIPS and PRELIMS are free to access for printers because they supply data, whereas there is a small project fee to access the paper sourcing information in PREPS.

Paper mills can access the PREPS tool to manage the pulp and forest source data for their own paper and board brands. Paper mills can only see their own brands and mills, and there is no fee as they are supplying data.
