Book Chain Project Environment Report 2024

Report

We are excited to release the third edition of the Book Chain Project Environment Report, which provides valuable insights into the publishing industry's environmental performance. The report presents aggregated data from mill and supplier Environmental Questionnaires (EQs), covering key topics such as GHG emissions, energy intensity, water use, and waste management.

For this edition, we have updated the methodology used to select the data included in the report. Previous reports were based on the traditional UK financial reporting period of April to March. To better align reporting with the Book Chain Project year, EQs are now included based on a September to August reporting cycle. We have also moved away from publishing multiple years of data within a single report, mainly due to the significant differences in sample sizes between reporting periods.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • GHG Emission Intensity Factors: The report provides GHG emission intensity factors at country, subregional, regional, and global levels. These factors can be used by publishers to estimate Scope 3 emissions from paper or print when site-specific data is unavailable. Mills and suppliers can also use them to benchmark their emissions performance against industry peers.

  • Energy Use: Detailed information on energy intensity, fuel mix, renewable energy share, and energy efficiency case studies provides insight into regional variations in energy use, as well as the actions being taken to reduce consumption and increase reliance on renewable energy sources.

  • Water Use and Wastewater Treatment: The report includes data on water intensity, initiatives to reduce water consumption, and improvements in wastewater treatment. It highlights the efforts of mills and suppliers to establish and achieve water reduction targets.
